There are many different techniques, which vary based on the instruments used to remove the fat. Below are some of the liposuction techniques used at Plastic Surgery of Texas.
Inconspicuous areas are chosen for a small incision – less than one quarter of an inch – and anesthetic fluid containing large volumes of diluted lidocaine and adrenaline are injected using the revolutionary tumescent technique. This fluid also minimizes bleeding.
A hollow tube called a cannula is inserted into the incision, and a mechanical, motorized device known as power-assisted liposuction is used to move the cannula back and forth, allowing the surgeon a great degree of precision and control.
In denser areas, ultrasonic-assisted liposuction may be used. In this case, a solid titanium cannula is inserted into the incisions and used to emulsify the fat using ultrasonic energy. The liquefied fat is then removed using power-assisted techniques.
If very small areas are being treated, a syringe liposuction technique might be used. In this minimally invasive technique, the surgeon inserts a syringe with a tube, and when the syringe is withdrawn, a suction is created that causes the fat cells to be withdrawn at the same time. Healing from this technique is generally fast, and blood loss is minimal.
We hear it time and time again from our patients (but it never gets old!).
While surgical fat removal is not a weight loss procedure or a cure for obesity, it can result in a fairly substantial amount of weight loss. The result is a slimmer, smoother contour on your body without that stubborn fat. Our patients have shared with us that they have reduced by four to eight sizes or even more!
Areas that are commonly treated include the neck, chest area in men, arms, abdomen/tummy, love handles, back, buttocks, thighs, knees, and calves. Tumescent liposuction of the entire abdomen and back – a circumferential treatment of the trunk – can offer a fantastic improvement of the shape and contour of your body.
If you are bothered by excess fat deposits - located anywhere on your body - that don't respond to diet or exercise, liposuction may be right for you. Ideal candidates for liposuction are:

Following the doctor’s instructions is key to the success of your surgery. It is important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion or motion during the time of healing.
